Media and Film at Sussex is one of the leading departments in the UK in the field of media theory, practice and research. We have a firmly established reputation in both teaching and research, built on our distinctive interdisciplinary approach. In the 2008 national research assessment exercise (RAE) our results were excellent, placing us joint 8th out of 47 UK departments, and in the top 5 according to a 'Research Power' rating based on the top two RAE bands. 100% of our research activity in Media and Film was rated as 'internationally recognised', internationally excellent' or 'world leading'. Our Department is regularly ranked in the top 10 in the UK (eg. in 'The Complete University Guide 2008').
In our engagements with the media we explore, interrogate and bring together theoretical, critical and methodological traditions drawn from the humanities, social sciences and creative practices. The special focus of our work is on the decisive cultural role of media systems within modern societies.
Teaching in the School of Media, Film and Music
We offer undergraduate degrees in Media Studies, Film Studies, Media Practice and Theory, Music and a joint degree in Cultural Studies. We also offer Masters degrees in Media and Cultural Studies, Film Studies, Gender and Media, Digital Media, Digital Documentary, Creative Media Practice and Journalism We also have a thriving community of around 50 doctoral students.
The aim of our degree programmes is to enable students to develop a rigorous critical understanding of how the media in all their forms - as technologies, instutitions, practices and texts - figure in modern life. We help our students - who come from all over the world and from all backgrounds - to develop their skills in media research and analysis, critical reading and conceptual thought, independent and collaborative work, and writing and presenting work in a range of styles and media. Students can also develop practical production skills in audio/visual media, digital imaging, photography and other media.
All of our faculty are active researchers, and so our students are taught by scholars internationally respected in their fields, supported by dedicated production tutors and doctoral students. We deliver high quality lectures and small group seminars (max.18 at UG level, 12 at PG level) and practice workshops (max.12). Our brand new production facilities are 'state of the art' and we have a dedicated media and film library. We also have links with many Brighton-based, national and international creative and media organisations.
Our degrees are not vocational, but they do equip students with skills relevant to future careers. The Department scored 10/10 for job prospects after graduation in the 2007 Guardian University Guide.
Research in The School of Media, Film and Music
Our internationally respected research explores questions around the materiality and politics of cultural forms and formations. Researchers work on, across and through a range of media: film, television, radio, photography, and 'new' and interactive forms, and specialise within three interlocking fields: media, technology, form and experience; cultural histories/cultural politics; and the politics of representation. The School is also home to the Sussex Centre for Cultural Studies and the innovative Centre for Research into Digital Material Culture.
