Media and Film at Sussex is one of the top rated departments in the UK. Pioneers in the field, we launched our first Media Studies degree in 1989 and have continued to build on these traditions. This year, in the 2012 Complete University Guide rankings we were ranked fifth out of ninety, and we have been in the top ten for four of the five years since these independent rankings were launched in 2008. In research we were ranked eighth in the last Research Assessment Exercise, with 100% of our research being rated as internationally recognised, and 75% as internationally excellent or world-leading. Our research spans areas including all aspects of media theory and practice, including the study of film, digital media, critical cultural theory, digital humanities, cultural studies, gender/sexuality and media, public sphere and citizenship, media memory, sonic media and auditory culture, screen aesthetics, globilization and journalism. Our faculty supervise doctoral students in all these areas.

Our students rate us highly too. In the 2011 National Student Survey we were seventh out of 72 departments overall, with over ninety per cent of our students rating our teaching very highly. ‘The quality of teaching has been outstanding’, commented one, whilst others praised the ‘intellectually engaging’ nature of the course or the ‘passionate’ commitment of tutors to their teaching. Our equipment and resources were praised as ‘exceptional’.
