Sussex Centre for Language Studies

Modern languages

The Modern Languages degree programmes are contemporary and modern, emphasising practical language proficiency and fostering awareness of cultural diversity and encounter.

We aim to equip Sussex Languages graduates with intellectual attributes and transferable skills fitting them for professional engagement with a global economy. The offer of three Romance languages - French, Italian and Spanish - plus German, Chinese and Japanese as 'proficiency' electives, provides a breadth of linguistic experience and a richness of cultural education that are increasingly rare in UK higher education.

We offer single honours in two languages studied equally (50:50), or you can combine your language study with another subject as a joint major (again, 50:50). Please read our undergraduate study pages for an overview of the different ways of studying a language at degree level.

We are also developing, through the 'electives' system, a flexible language programme allowing students on a wide range of single-honours degrees to opt for the award of ‘... with proficiency in (the target language)’: this would be certified in the transcript of the final degree. Read our page on proficiency in a language for more detail.

The Sussex Centre for Language Studies also provides Open Courses for the general public as well as for students and staff. Languages currently offered include: Arabic, British Sign Language, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, Spanish and Swahili. These courses are provided from beginners' to advanced levels and run weekly in term-time, at midday or in the early evening.
