The International Summer School's annual photography competition has always been very popular with our students and we hope this year will prove to be no exception. We've also launched some brand new competitions this year to give you even more opportunities to get involved and win great prizes.
- ISS annual photography competition - OPEN
-
Every year ISS students take part in the annual photography competition. It's a great way to document and share your ISS experience, and there's some great prizes up for grabs. This is a competition open to both session 1 students, and those staying for session 1&2 or just session 2. There will be a prize giving at the session 1 and the session 2 farewell ceremony.
This year’s categories are as follows:
Best overall photograph
The most coveted award, the best overall photograph is selected by the judges from hundreds of competition entries. The prize for this award will be a £50 amazon voucher which can be used in any country in the world.
Quintessentially English/ UK travel
For most of you ISS will be your first time in the UK and we love to see Britain through your eyes. It's great to see students enjoying cream teas or traveling across the UK whether it's on one of our organised trips, or independent travel. The best photograph in this category will be awarded a £25 amazon voucher which can be used in any country in the world.
Very Brighton
At the University of Sussex we are so very lucky to be within a stone’s throw from the buzzing sea-side town of Brighton, home to typical sea-side treasures, stunning Georgian architecture, and some of the most eccentric people the UK has to offer. So many of our students fall in love with Brighton - and that can really come across in a photograph. We'd really like to see some photographs of Brighton by day and by night. The best photograph in this category will be awarded a £25 amazon voucher which can be used in any country in the world.
Trips and activities
So many of our students have the most fun on our organised trips and activities and at our social events. It's where people make new friends, visit new places, and try new things, essentially what ISS is all about. This category is new this year to give you a chance to showcase photos from any trips, activities, parties and social events. We know our students have great fun at our parties, pub quizzes, karaoke nights, and on our day trips, and we'd love to see that caught on camera. The best photograph in this category will be awarded a £25 amazon voucher which can be used in any country in the world.
Life on Campus
For many of you it will be your first time away from home, or staying on campus - and campus here, at the University of Sussex International Summer School will be very different from anything you will have experienced. For starters our campus is set on the borders of the stunning South Down National Park! This category gives you an opportunity to showcase your photos of campus life in its entirety, from dorm parties, to exploring the grounds, and just hanging out with friends. The best photograph in this category will be awarded a £25 amazon voucher which can be used in any country in the world.
Miscellaneous
Taken a great photograph throughout your time at ISS but not sure if it fits into one of our categories? Not to worry, we've added a category for all of those great but random photos, or even photos taken on any international travel trips. The best photograph in this category will be awarded a £25 amazon voucher which can be used in any country in the world.Click here to download Rules and submission guidelines

-
Many of our students keep online blogs of their time at ISS, it’s a great way of documenting your travels, sharing your experiences with perspective students, and keeping everyone back home up to date with what you’re doing. So many students have such creative, funny, and insightful blogs we’ve decided to hold a competition for the best blog entry. Our judges will be looking for a blog that documents the whole ISS experience from courses, to campus life, making new friends, life in Brighton and the UK, any trips activities or social events, as well as writing style, creativity, and overall look.
The best entry will win a £100 gift voucher to spend at amazon.com.

- NEW - Best British accent competition - OPEN
-
We always overhear our students doing impressions of British accents, ranging from the terrible, to plain awful, and suprisingly good. Once you've been in Britain a while you'll get to know our slang, our catchphrases, and some of our accents. We've got such a diverse range of accents including 'Queen's English', 'Cockney', 'Home Counties', 'Scouse', 'Geordie', 'Manc', 'Bristolian', 'Janner', 'Northern Irish', 'Scottish', 'Welsh', and many more. This competition is a bit of fun and silliness, and we'd like students to submit short video clips of their best British accents to be edited into a mini film to be screened at farewell ceremonies. We hope you all have a go, take part, and don't take it too seriously. For inspiration check out some of last years students British accents at the end of this video. Our favourite three submissions will win some quentissentially British, iconic, and very cool prizes.
- NEW - Unnofficial Harry Potter fan fiction : plot twist/ alternative ending competition - OPEN
-
This year is the first year that the International Summer School is taking students to visit the Harry Potter studio tour, tickets sold out on the first day bookings were open, so we bought even more tickets and they sold out too. To celebrate the popularity of this marvellous British institution, we'll be running an unoffical Harry Potter fan fiction competition where students submit a plot twist or an alternative ending to the Harry Potter franchise. We don't want novels - the maximum word limit for this competition will be 50 words, and judges will be looking for intelligent, creative, and witty answers. The best submission will win Harry Potter merchandise purchased from the Harry Potter Studio Tour gift shop. This competition is open to all session 1 students.
