The Centre for International Education (CIE) provides a focal point for work on education and development in low-income countries and is one of the foremost groups in the UK in its field.
The Centre, formally established in 1989, was founded on the understanding that education lies at the heart of development and poverty reduction. Educational participation is both part of the definition of development and a means to achieving sustainable improvements in livelihoods and well being. Improved educational opportunities are important to ensure knowledge and skills can be applied constructively for the satisfaction of basic human needs, to diminish ill health, improve incomes and contribute to the economic growth that can support higher standards of living. CIE is now one of the largest and best known academic groups of its kind in the UK.
