Free Flu Vaccinations for Sussex Staff

The University is committed to supporting the wellbeing of its staff. At this time of year, many staff will be contacted by their NHS service provider to get their free seasonal flu vaccinations. The flu vaccine is given free on the NHS to adults who:

  • are 65 and over
  • have certain health conditions
  • are pregnant
  • are in long-stay residential care
  • receive a carer's allowance, or are the main carer for an older or disabled person who may be at risk if you get sick
  • live with someone who is more likely to get a severe infection due to a weakened immune system.

However, there will be some staff who are not eligible for a free flu vaccination. In these circumstances the University will help staff receive a vaccination free of charge.

How to receive your free flu vaccination

  • The easiest option is to contact the independent University pharmacy located near the Student Centre using their online booking form or call 01273699883 to arrange a vaccination appointment. The pharmacy is also offering walk-in appointments. If you take your staff ID to the appointment you will not be charged for your vaccination.

or

  • Alternatively, you can get a flu vaccination via a third-party provider of your choice. You can pay for it directly using a University Purchasing Card if you have one - or pay for it and then reclaim the cost through the Out of Pocket Expenses process - charging to sub-project code EM003-01 and expense type ‘staff wellbeing’. Please note that you must attach the proof of purchase (i.e. receipt) to the Purchasing Card reconciliation or expense claim.

Out of pocket expense claims must be made within three months, accompanied by the receipt. If you have already paid to have a private flu vaccination in the last three months you can claim back the cost with a receipt or proof of purchase. Read our overall guidance on how to make an expenses claim.

Participating staff should note that these vaccinations are provided by independent third parties and not by the University itself. If you are eligible for a free flu vaccination please ensure you book that way rather than paying for a private vaccination.
