Roseanne’s student perspective

Roseanne Thomas‘Getting a full sports bursary from Sussex to aid my development as a hockey goalkeeper has allowed me to travel to international training camps, participate in international tournaments and to purchase worldclass goalkeeper equipment. I’ve also been able to hire an experienced coach to provide one-to-one sessions. But financial support is only part of what Sussexsport can offer. The University’s facilities have allowed me to focus my training and fitness needs to the required international standard, and the sports development officers have evaluated my training and recovery needs and created fitness programmes that allow me to perform at my optimum level.

‘Each year I have improved as an athlete and a player, getting closer to my ultimate goal of representing Great Britain.’

Roseanne Thomas
Captain of the Sussex First XI Hockey team

Ali’s student perspective

Ali Monteath‘I've always been passionate about sport, and the facilities and opportunities at Sussex have made me more so. Thanks to a sports bursary and support from the University, I've really been able to progress as an athlete, maintaining my place in the men’s Great Britain Underwater Hockey squad, and earning the captaincy of the Great Britain Under-23s Underwater Hockey Squad. In particular, the gym facilities and available advice have pushed me in my training.

‘And outside of training, the squash courts and sports clubs such as Sussex Mountain Biking mean I'm never bored.’

Ali Monteath
Captain of the Under-23s GB Underwater Hockey Squad 2011
