The value of postgraduate education

As a top research-led university, we want to continue to attract the best students with a range of postgraduate awards that few other universities can match. We are committed to rewarding excellence, celebrating academic achievement and helping highly qualified graduates with the next step in their career.

With a Masters, you can expect, on average, to earn £5,500 more a year than someone only holding a Bachelors degree. (Joanne Lindley and Stephen Machin The Postgraduate Premium, 2013)

With a PhD, you can expect, on average, to earn 23 per cent more over a lifetime than someone only holding a Bachelors degree. (Professor Adrian Smith et al One Step Beyond: Making the Most of Postgraduate Education, 2010)

Securing funding is one of the main challenges graduates face when it comes to postgraduate study, but it is by no means insurmountable. Many of our students fund postgraduate study through a combination of personal savings, earnings, loans and small grants. For more information, visit Funding and part-time work.

Kseniya's student perspective

Kseniya Malykh‘The Chancellor’s International Scholarship gave me a chance to really focus on my degree and academic growth without being constantly worried about finding a part-time job and balancing my studies with work.’

Sandra's student perspective

Sandra Spighel‘Funding was a major concern for me but the Digital Documentary Scholarship scheme made it possible for me to take up my place. The scheme allowed me to combine my studies in documentary practice and theory at Sussex with an internship at Brighton-based production company back2back. I've been doing work experience there for nearly a year, during which I've also involved in organising two editions of See: The Brighton Documentary Film Festival.

‘What's more, the best is yet to come. With the help of the Digital Documentary Scholarship, I've had the unique chance of a first step in the industry and I'm already in the position of choosing between several job offers.’
