Refugees, Education and Development (811X3)

Spring teaching

This module:

  • brings together the fields of refugee studies and education
  • focuses on policy and practice in both formal and non-formal settings, at all stages in the life cycle
  • considers the concept of ‘refugee’ and its derivatives (asylum seekers, internally displaced people, forced migrants) before critiquing how education is implicated in the incorporation or exclusion of refugees from national citizenry
  • engages with international policies relating to refugees and education, as well as different methodological and theoretical perspectives that illuminate refugees’ diverse experiences in both the Global North and South.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 33 hours of contact time and about 267 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2024/25. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
