Module Outline

Chinese-language cinema is produced in the PRC, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and among diaspora communities. It is therefore an excellent frame through which to examine the limits of the ‘national cinema’ model of Film Studies. As a result, rather than look at an historical overview of Chinese-language film, in this module you will consider how ‘Chineseness’ and ‘national belonging’ have manifested in Chinese-language cinema, and how these manifestations have been shaped by different social, political, historical, and industrial contexts.

You will study a range of films from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, and from different time periods, that explore different ways in which ‘Chinese-ness’ can be represented cinematically. Topics covered may include:
• Representing historical experience
• Gender and national belonging
• Sexuality and ethnicity
• The ‘national’ film industry today

Examples of films that we have studied in the past include The Puppetmaster, Finding Mr Right, Kungfu Hustle, The Goddess, Old Dog, and Rouge.

Chinese Cinema B is taught through a combination of lecture, film screening, and seminar, and assessed through a written essay.

Pre-Requisite

Students are required to have taken a film option at Level 5 to take this option.
