Introduction
Former Vice-Chancellor Michael Farthing explains how research is the lifeblood of our activity at Sussex.
Excellence in research
He said: "Having celebrated our 50th anniversary last year, we are now looking forward to what our work can achieve in the coming 50 years.
"The foundation of that will be our new strategic plan, which we will finalise this year. That will set ambitious goals to continue to improve the excellence of our research."
Excellence in teaching
"Excellent research not only establishes our reputation as a major international university, but also supports high-quality teaching and learning, underpins scholarship and is central to the exchange of ideas that contribute positive change in the world around us.
"Research is integral at every level here; our undergraduates are learning from researchers at the forefront of their fields, and we actively encourage the most talented students to stay with us as researchers themselves."
Interdisciplinary research
"Our founding academics created a university which brought different disciplines together to find novel approaches and solutions to challenging questions. As shown by the diversity of work presented in this Review, today's Sussex research continues to flourish in a broad range of disciplines.
"From the pioneering work on consciousness science being conducted in the Sackler Centre, to the work on reducing energy emissions by the Sussex Energy Group, to the latest work on law and the internet and social media, our characteristic interdisciplinary approach to tackling real-world issues continues to be a mainstay of our work."
Making the future
"Philanthropic support is an increasingly important aspect of how we fund our work. Our major fundraising campaign, Making the Future, is already three-quarters of the way to its target. We have made new academic appointments this year to several new Chairs and Research Centres across the University, which are supported by a number of generous gifts.
