Former Vice-Chancellor Michael Farthing explains how we have spent the past year celebrating the 50th anniversary of our founding.
Excellence in research
He said: "Sussex was built on the strength of our research – we are now looking forwards to what our work can achieve in the coming 50 years.
"Maintaining and improving the quality of our research is the key focus of planning for our future."
Excellence in teaching
"Excellent research not only establishes our reputation as a major international university, but also supports high-quality teaching and learning, underpins scholarship and is central to the exchange of ideas that contribute positive change in the world around us.
"Research is integral at every level here; our undergraduates are learning from researchers at the forefront of their fields, and we hope to encourage the most talented students to stay with us as researchers themselves."
Interdisciplinary research
Our founding academics created a university which brought the different disciplines together to find novel approaches and solutions to challenging questions. As shown by the diversity of work presented in this Review, today's Sussex research is continuing to flourish in a broad range of disciplines. From creating a new model for drug discovery, to leveraging historical research archives to inform modern biological, environmental and climate research, our characteristic interdisciplinary approach is still a mainstay of our work.
Making the future
Philanthropic support is an increasingly important aspect of how we fund our work. We have recently launched a major fundraising campaign, Making the Future, and a number of generous gifts have meant we have been able to fund several new Chairs and Research Centres across the University.
