Research

Research Project: The Expression of Gender in the Human Voice

The main objective of my research, "The Expression of Gender in the Human Voice", is to characterize the acoustic and perceptual correlates to gender expression in the human voice and to investigate the contribution of bio-hormonal factors, behavioural strategies and stereotypical notions in explaining the acoustic diversity of the vocal expression of gender, by focusing on children's voices and homosexual and heterosexual adult speakers.

I hope this study will add to the understanding of the relationship between biological and cultural differences on sex and gender. It will also inform research in the areas of natural synthetic speech and language development.

Other interests:

  • cognitive processes in the vocal and visual expression of gender
  • gender development
  • vocal emotion encoding
