Member elected by Council (first appointed: 17 October 2010, re-appointed for a final term of three years on 1 August 2016, end of tenure: 31 July 2017).

After graduating in 1977, I qualified as a Chartered Accountant.  I then pursued a career in management consultancy, where I became a partner at both PricewaterhouseCoopers and IBM Global Services.  Retiring early, and seeking a change from the commercial world, I turned to academic life and completed an MA at Birkbeck College and a PhD at Royal Holloway, University of London.  I am, presently, a Research Fellow in History at the University of Westminster.

I bring many years commercial experience of advising clients on financial and customer systems, process improvements and operational efficiency.  I have also taken the role of project manager for multinational systems implementations.  I have run large businesses, as chief operating officer and HR director for divisions of IBM and PwC, taking responsibility for commercial risk assessment and the production of management information and performance measures.  I was, for several years, on the board that ran IBM's financial service consulting business, devising, implementing and communicating our strategy to our staff.  I am an experienced negotiator and a confident presenter and have a detailed understanding of the formulation of business propositions and sales.

As a recent part-time MA and PhD student, I have personal experience of what students need to succeed and to prosper at university, together with something of the concerns of academics in managing their departments.
