Research

I study insect navigation with a focus on sensory ecology, and more recently, cue integration. We have approached questions of cue integration by studying the fine details of ants’ movements during navigation in the field and lab. Such fine details can help identify the computational strategies being used for navigation and are key for the understanding of navigational mechanisms. We have now taken a further step to try and bridge the gap into how complex insect capabilities such as visual navigation are implemented in the ant brain. Sensory systems and neural circuits are both tuned to the natural environment of the animal and the behavioural requirements of the task. As a neuroethologist my overall interest is to understand the way that brains, bodies and the environment interact to produce natural behaviour.
