General English programme (21 hours per week)
Who are the courses for?
Any adult student aged 18 years or over who is not a beginner and who wishes to spend part of their holiday improving their English will find this course suitable. Students can attend for between one and seven weeks in July and August.
Course description
Classes take place over a period of seven weeks in July and August. There are 21 hours of tuition per week. The components of the core programme are:
- Listening and speaking skills
- Vocabulary development
- Grammar
- Reading skills
- Writing skills
- British Life and Culture.
Course aims
The course aims to provide an overall improvement in language proficiency and communication skills and to increase knowledge and understanding of British life and culture. The main emphasis will be on extending your vocabulary and developing your speaking and listening skills. You will also revise and consolidate your grammar and work on your reading and writing skills. You will be introduced to a variety of aspects of British life and culture through a wide range of media.
You will also have the opportunity to attend lectures on topics such as The History of Brighton and The English Language: past, present and future.

Entry requirements
We usually expect students to be in the IELTS 4.0-6.5 range, or equivalent. If you are slightly above or below this please contact us to evaluate if we could still accept you on the course.
Please note we do not accept Beginners or Advanced (above IELTS 7.0) students on this course.
What else?
Accommodation can be arranged in single study bedrooms on campus (self-catering).
Social programme: There will be weekly excursions to local places of interest and sports and social events on campus, plus some optional full-day excursions at weekends.
Your fee includes a free course-book. The Language Learning Centre offers you superb digital, multimedia classroom and self-access facilities with free internet access, satellite TV, together with a wide range of video and audio materials for personal use outside class hours.
During the summer you will meet and socialise with students on other courses at SCLS and on campus from pre-study courses, teacher training and academic summer schools, as well as having access to university facilities such as the Library and Sussexsport.
