The Biomedical Image Analysis research group is concerned with the acquisition, analysis and interpretation of biomedical images acquired through different modalities such as magnetic resonance, computed tomography, electrical impedance tomography and microscopy (light, fluorescent, confocal, and multiphoton).
Each of the stages of the research process presents challenging situations that require interdisciplinary collaboration, for instance: with physicists and electronics specialists for the microscopy and acquisition; with mathematicians for the modelling and statistical analysis; or with clinicians and biologists for the interpretation.
Crucially, by applying algorithms that provide quantitative results, we expect to reveal something of the underlying biological processes of cells, tumours or biological organisms. By using image analysis we are able to extract a wealth of information that is present in the data and otherwise would not possible to obtain by simple manual or qualitative analyses. Our final objective is to shed some light into the causes and processes of health and disease and thus help to find ways to improve human health.
