Brief Biography :



Appointed in 1990 to a Lectureship in International Relations in the then School of African and Asian Studies, having completed a doctoral thesis on 'Hegemony, counter-hegemony and state crisis in Central America' in the Department of Politics, University of Southampton.


In 1994 I was awarded a two-year ESRC Research Fellowship from the Global Environmental Change Programme working on the theme of 'Modernity, Globalisation and Environmental Knowledge: the International Relations of Knowledge and Causation of Global Environmental Change.'


Between 1997 and 1999, I was (Academic) sub-Dean of the School of African and Asian Studies. In addition I have been Teaching Convenor and Research Convenor for the International Relations and Politics group.


A substantial part of my teaching, research and academic administrative work has been with the Development Studies programmes in CDE.


In 2004 I was Visiting Prof. at the Institute of Political Economy, Carleton University, Ottawa.


During academic years 2006-2008 I am Visiting Associate Professor at the Middle East Technical University, northern Cyprus.


During 2006-2007 I was President of Sussex 'University and College Union' (UCU - the trade union of academic and academic related staff in the higher education sector). Between 2003 and 2006 I was Hon. Secretary of the local Association of University Teachers (UCU´s predecessor), and prior to that I had also been a vice-president of the local association.


I am currently on leave as Visiting Assoc. Prof. at the Middle East Technical University, NCC.
