Case study 1
This student's job involved inspection in his own Local Authority (LA). His 5,000-word projects explored the history of the inspection process and analysed its development in schools over the last 20 years. In his 10,000-word project he analysed data collected from schools in his LA that had undertaken critical self-review to improve performance. His dissertation, School improvement through inspection?: The verdict of primary teachers, involved more empirical work in his LA, focused on Ofsted inspections and school development.
Case study 2
This English/drama teacher wrote a 5,000-word review on girls and English having attended a seminar on the topic. She developed the theme in her second 5,000-word project by exploring the social construction of gender. Attending several twilight seminars on research methods and data analysis, she subsequently undertook research – using interviews to investigate girl school friendship groupings – to compile her 10,000-word project. She extended the scope of this project for her 20,000-word dissertation by studying male and female school-based friendship groups. During the course of her degree, this student generally met with her supervisor twice in a term. The meeting rate increased significantly, however, while preparing for her latter two projects.
