The Sussex Law School’s Research Centre for Responsibilities, Rights and the Law was launched in July 2008. The aim of the Centre is to facilitate and develop doctrinal, theoretical and empirical research into responsibilities, rights and the law nationally, in the European Union and internationally. The Centre is thus distinctive in exploring aspects of human rights from a variety of perspectives along with questions of responsibility.
The Centre’s work is organised around three established research themes:
Rights and Responsibilities in the UK
The Centre also supports the development of research examining law from the perspective of rights or responsibilities including criminal law and justice, corporate social responsibility, international law, international human rights, minority rights, gender justice, environmental law.
The Centre’s research contributes to the University research themes, most directly Security and Social Justice and Global Transformations.
CENTRE ACTIVITIES
The Centre undertakes the following activities to achieve its aims:
- Develop, support and encourage a programme of research and publications into responsibilities, rights and the law supporting original, significant and rigorous research of individuals and in collaboration with others.
- Make research bids and encourage and assist members in the making of research bids.
- Attract research students to undertake doctoral research in responsibilities, rights and the law across child and family, European law, international law and criminal law and justice.
- Develop and foster links with other disciplines and departments within LPS, the University and other research institutions.
- Develop research through the organisation of conferences, symposia and workshops addressing responsibilities and rights to bring together scholars from law and other disciplines to share research and ideas.
- Engage with end users, policy makers, government bodies, agencies and NGOs, responding to developments in law and policy in responsibilities and rights, nationally, from the European Union and internationally.
