Admissions

Biochemistry has been taught at Sussex since the late 1960s but it is doubtful if the students and lecturers from those days would recognise much of the teaching and research now done in the Division. Then, Biochemistry and Genetics were separate subjects, and the terms "Molecular Genetics" and "Molecular Medicine" would have been almost unknown. However, the remarkable pace of advances in the biological sciences means that we now offer degree programmes in all three of these topics, and although they might sound very different, they have a large common core, based around trying to understand how living things work at the molecular level.

The aim of the Biochemistry, Molecular Genetics and Molecular Medicine degree programmes is to provide a rigorous and stimulating grounding in the disciplines and techniques encompassed within the Life Sciences. These are key disciplines that provide important insights into understanding life processes in terms of biochemistry, the interactions of biological molecules and how these contribute to the molecular mechanisms of many diseases and their diagnosis and treatment.

The Department will be awarding a number of competitive scholarships this year. We will award a scholarship of £1,000 per year for 3As and £500 per year for AAB at A-level. This excludes General Studies, and must normally include two science A-levels. Scholarship holders will have to maintain a grand mean of 65% in order to retain their scholarships in subsequent years. Scholarships will be awarded by cheque at a departmental ceremony in week 5 of the Autumn term.
