The Biochemistry and Biomedical Science Division is a leading research centre for biomedical science. The Division achieved a strong result in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) placing us 8th in the subject nationally. In all 85% of our research was rated as being world-leading, internationally excellent or internationally recognised. The involvement of world-leading researchers has a huge impact on our degree programmes, ensuring they are dynamic and up-to-date. This becomes even more apparent in the final year when you get the opportunity to pursue an independent two term project in the laboratories of internationally recognised scientists.
The research and teaching interests within the Division cover fundamental biochemical research as well as its application to clinical problems in medicine and therapeutics. The Division has strengths in genomics and genome stability, cell regulation, cell biology, structural biology, biophysics, bioinformatics, infectious diseases as well as cancer.
We offer a range of both undergraduate and postgraduate courses within the Division, details of which can be found on the following pages. Courses are taught by research active staff who are international leaders in their respective field. Students are taught cutting-edge findings, join world class research labs for their practical work, while maintaining a favourable staff:student ratio that allows small group teaching, such as tutorials which are at the heart of teaching at Sussex.
