Core books: Improving access to essential texts

Last summer, we interfiled the Core books with the rest of the collection in the Library. This enabled us to create much needed extra study space on the ground floor.

Over the last few years, the use of Core books within the Library has increased but actual borrowing of these books has decreased. There has also been a reduction in the number of books added to the Core collection overall, due to the increased availability of ebooks.

For these reasons, and after extensive consultation with academics and students, we have decided to make the Core collection a 'Reference only' collection.

For each book in the Core collection, there will always be multiple 7 Day Loan copies that are available to borrow and request, as well as an ebook where this is available.

We will be encouraging students to make use of the free scanning facility of the new MFD machines, which can be used to scan up to 10% or one chapter of a book.

Workshops will be run to show students how to annotate PDFs as part of our Digital Skills Programme, which should help to lessen the need to spend money on printing.
