Widening Participation

The University of Sussex believes that higher education helps social mobility, and that it is important for all young people to have the opportunity to reach their full potential, regardless of their background. The University’s widening participation (WP) team provides a responsive and inclusive programme, which aims to provide young people with the insight to make informed choices about their future.

Widening participation is about helping young people through the decision making process so that they can access the right course and university for them, supporting students to succeed in their studies and thrive during their time at university, and progress to a graduate level job or further study – the full student lifecycle.

The WP team is responsible for the pre-entry part of the lifecycle, and we run a variety of activities working with pupils in primary schools right the way through to sixth form.  Our First-Generation Scholars programme is designed to introduce young people to higher education, to raise aspirations and attainment, and to help make sense of choices around higher education.

Access Agreement

Universities charging over £6,000 are required to submit an Access Agreement to the Office for Fair Access (OFFA) detailing their tuition fee limit and the access measures they intend to put in place, for example outreach work and financial support. The University's latest Access Agreement can be found here.
