If you decide to study at Sussex for the full academic year, you are guaranteed University-managed accommodation if you apply by our 1 August deadline. Accommodation for visiting and exchange students attending for the part year (either autumn only or spring including the assessment period) is more limited, though rooms are usually available. You may need to consider alternative housing options, including host family accommodation.
The Sussex Abroad Office writes to successful applicants to give pre-arrival information and details about accommodation during the summer for students starting in September, and in late November for students starting in January.
Many students live off campus in private, rented accommodation, mainly in Brighton & Hove. The Housing Office provides advice and guidance on renting in the private sector, but cannot arrange your housing for you.

All University accommodation is self-catering, usually with communal kitchens. You will need cutlery, crockery, saucepans and kitchen utensils, though it may be more practical to buy these in the UK than to bring them with you. You can purchase University catering packs containing cooking utensils and crockery for £30. Bathroom facilities are normally shared, although about 45 per cent of our accommodation now has en-suite facilities. Keeping in touch with family and friends is easy as all rooms on campus are equipped with telephones and wireless and broadband internet access.
The University provides pillows to students in residence. You may wish to purchase a set of quality new bedding (including duvet, duvet cover, bottom sheet, pillow and pillow case and bathtowel), for around £40.
Settling in
When you arrive we aim to help you settle in as smoothly as possible. We know that when you first come to the UK you may feel anxious that you do not know anyone and worry that other students are already lifelong friends. But, rest assured, everybody feels the same and, by living in University accommodation, you soon get to know your neighbours.
With our residential facebook pages you can even connect with other students and make friends with your neighbours before you arrive. To help you settle in, most residences have a live-in residential advisor – an established Sussex student who will help you when you arrive and can assist with minor problems that may crop up throughout your time at Sussex.
University housing on campus
Depending on your period of study at Sussex, some of these options might not be available.
Brighthelm
A number of the 60 five-bedroom houses in this development are allocated to undergraduate and study abroad students. Others are reserved for postgraduates.
East Slope
East Slope has terraced single-storey flats, designed for groups of between six and 12 students, offering both single and shared study-bedrooms.
Lewes Court
About 500 students live in the Lewes Court flats, which are designed for groups of five or six students. The accommodation includes 250 en-suite rooms, 238 standard rooms, and a few self-contained studios with en-suite bathrooms.
Northfield
This new development comprises 17 residences providing 1,072 single en-suite bedrooms, 21 single-person studios and 12 two-bedroom family flats, plus a social centre.
Park Village
Park Village includes nearly 500 single study-bedrooms, 24 small two-bedroom flats and 36 self-contained family flats, in a series of three-storey houses.
Stanmer Court
This development for 474 students consists of a number of self-contained flats, housing between four and six students, and 11 single-person units. All rooms have their own en-suite bathrooms.
Swanborough
This accommodation provides 250 en-suite rooms designed around sixand seven-person self-contained flats.
The Park Houses
Each of these four large residences houses about 100 students, mostly in single study-bedrooms.
Housing for students with disabilities
Adapted accommodation is available on campus for students with disabilities who need some assistance with dayto- day living. Rooms allocated are on a first-come, first-served basis, with continuing students having priority.
University housing in Brighton & Hove
The University has a variety of accommodation in residential areas of Brighton & Hove, all with easy access to campus. All have communal kitchens and other domestic facilities. Rents At the time of going to press June 2013 the rent for University-managed accommodation had not been set for the academic year 2014-2015. However, as a guide, in the 2013-14 academic year, University-managed accommodation rent ranges between approximately £81 and £120 per week for standard accommodation, and is £130-137 per week for an en-suite study room. The majority of rooms are let on an academic-year basis (September to June).
