Campus facilities
The best thing about campus is that everything is so convenient, with academic, social and sports facilities just a short walk away, as well as a supermarket with a post office and a newsagent, a weekly market, launderettes, banks and a bookshop. Sussex has Fairtrade status, and we are committed to selling Fairtrade foods in our shops and restaurants.
Set in acres of parkland, the University of Sussex campus is a safe and welcoming community with its own shops, bars and amenities, all within walking distance. All of our accommodation is selfcatering so you should soon get used to cooking for yourself. There are also plenty of places to eat out on campus. Bramber House has a ground-floor dining hall which is open early until late, with snacks, a deli counter and a choice of hot food. The first-floor restaurant offers buffet-counter service with a chef’s station and a salad bar, as well as a coffee and wine bar. The Library Café and Arts Piazza Café are great places to meet your friends for lunch or relax between seminars with a coffee.
Campus services include a health centre, a dentist, a pharmacy, the interdenominational Meeting House chaplaincy, and a Muslim Student Centre and prayer room (refer to page 12). The University also operates a 24-hour, year round security/reception point to assist anyone who needs help.
With so many people living and working on campus, socialising is important. The campus has a number of bars so whether you want a big night out or a quiet cup of tea after a hard day at the Library, you’ll find somewhere that suits your mood and budget.
University of Sussex Students’ Union
The Students’ Union is an independent student-led organisation and the focus of many student activities at Sussex. The Students’ Union organises entertainment and social events and runs shops and bars on campus. It also provides free and confidential advice on housing, fees and any other issues you might face whether academic or otherwise.
The annually elected Students’ Union officers ensure that there is student representation throughout the University community so that your opinions are heard. Membership of the Union is free and all students are automatically members.
Kelly's Union perspective
At Sussex there’s so much more to do than just your academic work. The Students’ Union provides a wide range of activities that can really
enhance your time at university. We also offer advice and support services to all students covering a wide range of issues, from money problems to housing.
‘Whether it’s playing for a sports team, writing for the weekly newspaper, joining a society, or volunteering in the community, there are so many ways to get involved, meet new people and learn new skills. It’s great being part of such a vibrant and diverse campus community.’
Kelly McBride,
University of Sussex, Students' Union President
Clubs, societies and entertainment
Living on campus it won’t take you long to get involved with the great variety of activities on offer. The Students’ Union provides a range of entertainment on and off campus – comedy gigs, quizzes and live-music nights and student-led DJ nights.
The Students’ Union supports over 140 societies, 25 sports clubs and hundreds of volunteering opportunities, so you’re bound to find something that interests you. Whether you’re into ultimate frisbee, film-making or breakdancing, this is your chance to try something different and meet a whole new group of people. Joining a society is a great way of getting to know people. You will have plenty of opportunities to find out more during Freshers’ events held at the start of the autumn term. To explore the range of current activities available, visit the Students’ Union website.
Events
The Students’ Union also runs several major events throughout the academic year, such as cultural and religious festivities, a host of social and academic activities, and welcome events for newcomers held during the first few days of term. These include introductory sessions to clubs and societies as well as live music and much, much more.
