Life at Sussex offers you the best of both worlds. The city of Brighton & Hove has sun, sea, great places to eat and shop, a rich cultural life, a cosmopolitan vibe – and it’s only an hour from London. Meanwhile our beautiful leafy campus provides a peaceful living environment to help you focus on your studies, and excellent sports facilities so you can make the most of your spare time.
- choose University-managed housing on campus or in Brighton & Hove
- flats are self-catering, and many rooms are en-suite
- specially adapted rooms for students with disabilities
You may want to live by the sea in Brighton & Hove, or in the rolling parkland setting of the University campus; or you may have specific housing needs, such as space for children.
Whatever your preferences, our Housing Office is happy to discuss them with you. We put considerable effort into helping postgraduate students find suitable accommodation, including:
- a guarantee of housing for all new full-time, full-year research students in their first year of study and for non-EU Masters degree students registering in October who return the housing application form along with a £250 pre-payment before 1 August
- a choice of housing both on campus and in nearby Brighton & Hove
- individual telephones – with facilities for direct dialling – in all study-bedrooms on campus
- broadband – internet connection giving access to the University network service – in all study-bedrooms on campus and wireless access in certain off-campus residences
- rental periods of up to 50 weeks – there is no need to move out in the vacations
- adapted rooms for students with disabilities
- a limited amount of family housing, and
- an online database of furnished accommodation for those looking to rent private-sector housing.
University-managed accommodation
All University-managed housing is self-catering with shared kitchens and other communal areas. If you live in one of our residences, you enjoy the benefits of having a ready-made student community and facilities specifically designed with your needs in mind.
On campus
Postgraduate accommodation on campus is available in Brighthelm, East Slope, Park Village and Stanmer Court. Each of the Brighthelm houses has five study-bedrooms and communal facilities, while Northfield and Stanmer Court comprise a number of self-contained flats with large kitchen-diners and individual en-suite bedrooms. There are also a number of shared rooms in East Slope and some single rooms in Park Village. All kitchens have full cooking facilities, but there are also many places on campus to buy meals and snacks.
Opened in 2011, our new residential development Northfield provides additional single-student and family accommodation on campus for postgraduate students.
Brighton & Hove
Off campus, the University’s main postgraduate housing development is a purpose-built residence, King’s Road, in the centre of Brighton. The accommodation is located on the vibrant Brighton seafront and is arranged in self-catering flats, mostly in units of six study-bedrooms with a shared kitchen and bathrooms. We also own and manage a number of other smaller properties in Brighton & Hove, some of which are let exclusively to postgraduates.
Rents
Rents for the 2012-13 academic year have not yet been finalised. As a guide, in the 2011-12 academic year the weekly rent for a study bedroom in Brighthelm was £110.30 inclusive; £102.90 plus service charge for King’s Road; £112-£119 per week inclusive for Stanmer Court; and £57-£69 per person per week inclusive for a shared room in East Slope.
For more details, refer to Living expenses and University accommodation costs.
Private-sector housing in Brighton and the surrounding area
Prospective students looking for accommodation in the private sector can search online on the University’s Studentpad website, which is updated daily. If you are off campus and wish to access Studentpad, you will need to contact the Housing Office for the current password. To do so, you should email housing@sussex.ac.uk quoting your registration or application number.
Students with children
There are about 65 small family flats in University-managed residences, mostly on campus. There are some two-bedroom flats but most flats have only one bedroom, which means that they are normally allocated to families with one small child. Family flats are in such heavy demand that they are let only to students with accompanying children.
You are advised not to bring your family to Sussex until suitable accommodation has been confirmed in writing by the University.

David’s perspective
‘When my wife and I decided to study at Sussex, we applied for University accommodation. We were delighted with the lovely self-contained flat on Clifton Road in Brighton that we got via the Housing Office. It’s especially designed for couples and we can live independently – it has its own study room with internet access and a fully equipped kitchen. At the same time, it’s good to have the chance to socialise with students from the other flats in the building, which isn’t always possible when you rent in the private sector.
‘Comfortable accommodation is crucial when you’re coming from another continent (we’re from Chile) because it’s important to feel at home in the place you’re living. We’re well located close to Brighton’s main attractions, the sea, parks and services. In terms of transportation it’s easy to get to the University by bus or train.
‘We’re having a great time here, and I’m convinced that we’re going to have good memories of this place.’

Tanay’s perspective
‘I’m currently the senior Residential Advisor (RA) for King’s Road, one of the University-managed residences in the heart of Brighton.
‘RAs work to address the welfare needs of students living in University accommodation. We’re a first point of contact and provide help and advice on various academic, personal and general issues. This role has enabled me to interact with a vast number of students and discover a lot more about different cultures and traditions, allowing me to truly immerse myself in the diversity that Sussex and Brighton are so proud of.
‘Living in King’s Road is one of the best perks of my role as an RA. It’s conveniently located on the Brighton seafront and less than two minutes’ walk away from the city’s bustling nightlife and clubs. This central location, close to cafés, restaurants and supermarkets is ideal for students who would like to experience laid-back cosmopolitan Brighton at its best.’
