University-managed accommodation

All University-managed housing is self-catering, mostly with shared kitchens and other communal areas. If you live in one of our residences, you enjoy the benefits of having a ready-made student community and facilities specifically designed with your needs in mind.

On-campus accommodation

Postgraduate accommodation on campus is available in Brighthelm, East Slope, Northfield, Park Village and Stanmer Court. Each of the Brighthelm houses has five study-bedrooms and communal facilities, while Northfield and Stanmer Court comprise a number of selfcontained flats with large kitchen-diners and individual en-suite bedrooms, as well as some single-person studio flats. There are also a number of shared rooms in East Slope and some single rooms in Park Village. All kitchens have full cooking facilities, but there are also many places on campus to buy meals and snacks.

Our Northfield residences, which opened recently, also contain 12 two-bedroom family flats (refer to Students with children, below).

Off-campus accommodation in Brighton & Hove

Off campus, the University's main postgraduate housing development is a purpose-built residence, Kings Road, in the centre of Brighton. The accommodation is located on the vibrant Brighton seafront and is arranged in self-catering flats, mostly in units of six study-bedrooms with a shared kitchen and bathrooms. We also own and manage a number of smaller properties in Brighton & Hove, some of which are let exclusively to postgraduates.

Working in partnership with a student housing provider, a new purpose-built residence situated on London Road in Brighton will open for new students in 2014.

Rents

Rents for the 2014/2015 academic year have not yet been finalised. As a guide, in the 2013/2014 academic year, the weekly rent was:

  • £137.40 inclusive for Northfield
  • £131.30 inclusive for Stanmer Court
  • £121.30 inclusive for Brighthelm
  • £115.50-£117.50 inclusive for Kings Road
  • £90.20 inclusive for Park Village

Private-sector housing in Brighton and the surrounding area

Prospective students looking for accommodation in the private sector can search online on the University's Studentpad website which is updated daily. If you are off campus and wish to access Studentpad, you will need to contact the Housing Office for the current password. To do so, you should email housing@sussex.ac.uk quoting your registration or application number.

The Students' Union runs its own lettings agency, Sussex Student Lettings, which does not charge students any administration fees, unlike the great majority of lettings agents. Sussex Student Lettings is based in the Students' Union in Falmer House.

Students with children

There are about 60 small family flats in University-managed residences, mostly on campus. There are some two-bedroom flats but most flats have only one bedroom, which means that they are normally allocated to families with one small child. Family flats are in such high demand that they are let only to students with accompanying children.

You are advised not to bring your family to Sussex until suitable accommodation has been confirmed in writing by the University.

Yusuf's student perspective

Yusuf Dirie ‘I'm currently the Senior Residential Advisor (RA) for the Stanmer Court residence. Residential Advisors are trained to address the welfare needs of the students living in the residences, as well as to promote a harmonious living environment for all. We're here as a first port of call to help and advise on academic or personal issues and aim to make settling in during the first weeks of your postgraduate course as easy as possible.

‘During my time as an RA I've met and developed friendships with students from all over the world, offering me an invaluable opportunity to learn about and experience other people's culture (and foods!).

‘I've loved living in Stanmer Court and can't speak highly enough of it – from its friendly staff to its proximity to both the train station and the bus stop. I couldn't imagine myself living anywhere else.’
