Entrepreneurial skills are essential for career success – whether in small and medium-sized enterprises, your own business or on project-based venture teams in large companies.

On this intensive and innovative course, you’ll gain an in-depth understanding of entrepreneurship and innovation. The course covers different organisational, sectorial and geographical contexts, and aims to combine state-of-the-art academic knowledge with practical challenges in the business world.

You’ll develop practical and reflective skills around conceptualising, designing, managing and growing new ventures and existing entrepreneurial organisations.

How will I study?

You’ll study core modules and options in the autumn and spring terms. A research methods module runs in the spring term. In the summer term, you choose to either carry out an independent research project or to work on a company-based project with the Sussex Innovation Centre.

You’ll be assessed by a combination of coursework, essays, group and individual reports, and presentations. There are also unseen examinations.

How much does it cost?

Fees

UK/EU students:
£10,600 per year
Channel Islands and Isle of Man students:
£10,600 per year
International students:
£17,900 per year

Note that your fees may be subject to an increase on an annual basis.

If you’re studying part time over two years, you’ll be charged 50% of the equivalent 2018 full-time fee in each year of study. The fee in your second year – if you continue your studies without a break – will be subject to a 2.5% increase (subject to rounding).

Design, Creativity and Innovation

You are introduced to design and creativity as approaches to problems in many different societal contexts, with a focus on open, complex, dynamic and networked problems that had proven to be unsolvable by more conventional means.

Design and creativity are central to the creation of novelty and value for people, and can be harnessed to transform organizations, communities and societies by tackling real world challenges.

We will discuss key theoretical perspectives, principles, tools and practices that lead to the creation of solutions to problems that range from making things to shaping processes, policies, organisations, and even cities and institutions.

You will be taught concepts and methodologies for understanding and incorporating design, creativity and innovation into your everyday practices.

Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice

The module provides you with up-to-date and relevant insights into contemporary academic thinking on entrepreneurship and small business, emerging and cutting edge themes in entrepreneurship theory and practice. It draws on a wide range of perspectives and examples to cover core themes and topics in the area including:

  • enterprise policy or the role of government and other institutions in entrepreneurship and the creation and growth of new firms
  • the formation and growth of new ventures
  • working and managing in small businesses
  • entrepreneurial management in small firms
  • entrepreneurship in the private, public and third sector and contemporary issues in entrepreneurship and small business research.

Leading, Managing and Developing People

In this module, you look at the key issues in people management and development.

You examine contemporary research on employment and effective approaches to human resource (HR) and learning development (L&D) practice.

You focus on the links between people management practices and positive organisational outcomes and research that highlights major changes and developments in practice.

You also look at the debates surrounding theory and practice in specific fields including: 

  • leadership
  • flexibility
  • change management.

You will develop the skills to become an effective manager, and HR specialist - learning to manage people fairly and increase levels of engagement, commitment, motivation and performance.

Managing Innovation

This module equips you with the knowledge to understand, and the skills to manage, innovation at operational and strategic levels. The management of innovation is inherently interdisciplinary and multi-functional, so we aim here to provide you with an integrative approach to the management of innovation. Specifically, we aim to integrate the management of market, technological and organisational change to improve the competitiveness of firms and effectiveness of other organisations. You will explore the argument that the process of innovation management is essentially generic, although organisation, technological and market specific factors will constrain choices and actions.

New Venture Creation and Simulation

This module gives you a comprehensive understanding of the entrepreneurial process and the development of new ventures, with equal attention paid to both business and public/non-for-profit sectors. Entrepreneurship is viewed as a process that provides sustainable economic, social and institutional change. Conceptual foundations are matched with practical training, to enable you to formulate and explore entrepreneurial ideas and opportunities.

Research Methods (International Management)

  • how to carry out literature reviews

  • how to interpret research results and write up a research project report

Research Project (Entrepreneurship and Innovation)

This module enables you to conceptualise, implement and report on a self-guided and independent effort of research or analysis.

In the first part of the module, you will develop a proposal for a project you want to carry out on the basis of a given research topic or a case study.

In the second part of the module, you will carry out the agreed project and prepare a report on this effort in which you demonstrate your ability to critically survey, appreciate and reflect on relevant theories, models or practices and then employ these to make recommendations for problem solutions.

Accounting for Decision Makers

This module is designed as an introduction for non-financial managers to comparative international accounting, and financial reporting and analysis, within the context of converging standards.

No prior knowledge of accounting procedures is assumed or required.

Global Business

  • 15 credits

The module will widen the perspective of aspiring managers regarding the strategic implications of global change and facilitate more informed strategic planning and implementation within companies. The module is introductory and wide ranging in scope. A balance is sought between theory and practice with seminars placing an emphasis on contemporary case studies.

Marketing Management

Gone are the stable markets of yesteryear. Today's markets are characterised by rapidly changing customers' wants, accelerating pace of technological advances, and intensifying competition, presenting major challenges for both incumbent and upstart enterprises alike. For most organisations, marketing is a major determinant of success. This module is designed to help you develop an appreciation of the role of marketing and the management of marketing functions in the modern organisation. The impact of marketing and the contribution of marketing to organisational performance in the dynamic, globally competitive markets of today will be addressed. The module will also focus on what being market-oriented really means in practice to organisations operating in manufacturing and service industries, as well as in profit and non-profit enterprises.

The module will introduce you to the theories, concepts, models, techniques and current best-practices for developing and implementing marketing strategies and actions. Marketing decision-making should not take place in a vacuum, and this course will familiarise you with the components of market analysis and strategy development with respect to the organisation, its customers, competitors and collaborators. There will also be indepth coverage of marketing implementation and control issues through the concept of the integrated marketing mix: the product/service offering and customer service, communications, pricing and channels.

Business Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility

This module is aimed at students on the range of 'conversion' type of MSc programmes across the department and is delivered in the International Accounting and Governance programme as a core. The focus is on contemporary perspectives and practices within the broadly defined areas of Corporate Social Responsibility and Governance.

The module starts from the premise that CSR is a contested, problematic and developing area of study. There is an acceptance that an understanding of ethical frameworks is required to inform debate on this subject and that research generated evidence and insights are necessary to substantiate assertion.

The focus is also practical, and you will individually undertake research into an organisation's orientation and practice towards its stakeholders. A critical and questioning approach to this will be encouraged and required to 'see beyond' the often platitudinous veneer that can characterise this relationship.

Throughout the module the emphasis will be on devloping your own coherent and informed view of matters such as corporate and governance, together with issues of professional ethics within a globalised context. In particular, we examine the extent to which corporate governance practices are moving towards convergence.

The coursework requires you to work individually to produce a case study analysis of contemporary stakeholder issues and to thereby further your understanding and exercise research skills and judgement. Supporting and underpinning this is a week by week seminar programme requiring you to ascertain and appreciate your own and others' 'ethical profiles', locate and interpret research-based insights and undertake case study analysis of organisational practices and professional ethical dilemmas.

An examination will test your grasp of relevant concepts, theory and ability to apply insights.

Digital Marketing

This cutting-edge marketing module discusses how digital media technology has changed marketing and gives detailed strategies on how to embrace the online environment challenges.

The main aim of this module is to provide you with a critical understanding of the key concepts, fundamentals and challenges of E-Marketing. We will explore the impact of the web on the traditional marketing mix of goods and services and examine the key ingredients of the online Micro and Macro environment. Moreover, E-marketing analyses online consumers’ behaviour and their response to social media strategies and new technologies used by companies.

The impact of electronic technologies on marketing strategy, market segmentation, positioning, and communication strategies is also addressed. An emphasis is also placed on the utilisation of customer relationship marketing approaches within a dynamic online environment. Finally, online marketing strategy formulation and implementation within a changing technology environment is thoroughly described.

By the end of the module, students are expected to develop and demonstrate knowledge and skills in the following areas:

  • the theoretical and practical importance of the E-marketing mix and its impact on marketing strategy
  • the online consumer behaviour and online decision-making process
  • various online marketing strategies for social media
  • strategic analysis of the online environment
  • online performance measurement.

Entrepreneurial Finance

  • 15 credits

This module provides you with an understanding of the role finance plays in the survival and growth of small firms. It begins by discussing the challenges of characterising firm growth and how firms use capital to grow, drawing upon empirical evidence on the topic. It then covers the variety of sources firms may use for external capital, including (but not limited to) banks, business angels, venture capitalists and small cap stock markets, and how these investments are valued. It concludes by discussing differences in funding environments for small firms in different countries, and covers the challenges faced by policymakers in developing policy tools to provide support for small firms.

Information Systems and Management

  • 15 credits

You study how Information Systems are used by organisations in commerical, public and voluntary sectors.

You explore how Information Systems, including cloud computing and social networking, link technology and business strategy, and help to provide sustainable competitive advantage to businesses.

You develop an understanding of the systems, technologies, concepts, tools, and frameworks needed to deploy, manage, and evaluate technology strategies, and processes, as well as the resources needed to gain competitive advantage.

Innovation in the Creative Economy

  • 15 credits

You will learn the key aspects underpinning the creative economy—a significant driver of growth in recent years— and develop an understanding of how innovation takes place in the creative industries. You will also learn how these innovations are commercialised. By linking theory with real-world practices, you'll discover how firms and other organisations leverage creativity, innovation and technology in order to create value, and how this value is captured and marketed.

International Entrepreneurship

  • 15 credits

The focus of this module is on the development and growth of new firms from establishment to the early stages of international development. Much of the core teaching in international business relates to the strategic decisions made by established large firms, but SMEs are increasingly engaged in both foreign trade and investment - as is evidenced by the phenomena of born-global firms, international new ventures, and rapidly internationalising firms. In this context, the links between entrepreneurship, innovation, and internationalisation are crucial.

Managing Intellectual Property

  • 15 credits

Protecting intellectual assets has become a key success factor for organisations in the knowledge-based economy. This module provides you with the knowledge and tools for managing intellectual property (IP), and how best to deploy and appropriate these to create value from the perspective of both private and public-sector organisations. More specifically, you will gain an understanding of IP strategies and approaches in multinational corporations, small and medium-sized enterprises as well as universities and research institutes. You will learn about patents and copyrights as instruments to protect IP as well as develop an understanding of less formal, alternative approaches.
