'Over the next fifty years change would be even more rapid than in the past fifty years; so that flexibility of mind would be a necessary condition of a fully effective intellectual contribution by the graduates-to-be.'
Sir John Fulton 1961

Message from the Chair

In August 1961, Sussex's founders charted an inspiring and innovative vision for the future of higher education in an age of optimism, confidence and growth. Making the future is our collective opportunity to renew the Sussex vision and grow the University into the next decade and beyond.

Our founders invited flexibility of thought and freedom to contribute to the understanding of a complex world. Sussex pioneered multi-subject honours courses, which cut across traditional subject boundaries to create new knowledge and new ways of thinking. For nearly 50 years, Sussex alumni have been explorers at the frontiers of knowledge, with 11,000 students currently filling in the outlines of the map of learning.

Sussex has become a world-class centre of excellence for research. It has fostered Nobel Prize winners and future leaders of vital organisations and institutions, confident communicators, creative thinkers and internationalists delivering positive change in the world.

As our 50th year approaches, now is the time to take stock of what has been achieved, evaluate where we are now and plot our course for the future.

I am delighted to introduce Making the future, the strategic plan which sets out the principal goals and strategies at Sussex for the next seven years.

It outlines how the University aims to succeed in the highly competitive global Higher Education context - to organise its structures, manage its activities and invest its resources to deliver outstanding education, training and research.

It re-asserts the University of Sussex as a powerful force in global higher education, a progressive university delivering innovative thought and action, with a worldwide reputation for excellence in learning, research and discovery.

It is you, our staff, students, alumni, supporters and external partners who will turn this vision into reality. I sincerely hope that you will be inspired to work together, in, and with the University to make a positive difference in the world and engage with some of the greatest challenges and opportunities of the twenty-first century.
