CENTRIM - Centre for Research in Innovation Management, University of Brighton, UK
CENTRIM conducts and applies cutting-edge innovation research to train, consult and develop products and services. We specialise in 'closing the loop' between academic research and practice by transferring academic knowledge of technology strategy, problem solving, and creativity facilitation to businesses and social enterprises. The Centre is co-located with SPRU in the Freeman Centre and we work closely together on projects as well as jointly convening seminars, training activities and events.
CENTRIM currently works in four major research areas:
- innovation in the project economy
- innovation in the creative industries
- learning networks
- user innovation.
We also pursue a number of emerging research themes that are vital to innovation management in developed and developing countries. These include innovation in East Asia, innovation in university research, knowledge leakage in business and innovation in cyber crime. The close overlap with some of SPRU's research allows us to exploit each institution's specialized skills and areas of expertise. The Freeman Centre itself was specifically designed to enhance such trans-institutional and inter-disciplinary knowledge sharing as part of a JIF grant to establish an institutional home on the University of Sussex campus for research in Innovation and Science Policy. The building has a 20 year lease which dedicates its use to research in these areas. Sharing such a building with CENTRIM allows SPRU to enhance its engagement with the industrial, policy and NGO sectors.
Institute of Development Studies
The world-leading Institute of Development Studies (IDS), which is co-located with SPRU on the University of Sussex campus, is a multidisciplinary global organisation devoted to research, teaching, and knowledge services for international development. With a reputation gained over 40 years, IDS has distinguished itself by a people-centred perspective and an intricate network comprised of international organisations, grassroots activists, government, business, and media. We also convene eight postgraduate courses spanning a range of topics.
Currently, IDS maintains five closely linked research teams:
- Globalisation
- Governance
- Knowledge Technology and Society
- Participation, Power and Social Change
- Vulnerability and Poverty Reduction.
There are considerable overlaps with the research interests of SPRU faculty and students, and close research and teaching relationships, including joint DPhils. Currently, SPRU and IDS jointly run the STEPS research centre.
Visit the Institute of Development Studies website.
