SPRU - Science and Technology Policy Research

Research themes

Our research examines issues raised by scientific and technological change. We pursue ways to achieve excellence, efficiency and competitiveness in the use of science and technology by firms engaged in knowledge exchange and innovation management; by industries and regional authorities seeking to understand technological trajectories and the clustering of companies; and governments seeking to nurture competences and capabilities.

Recent projects in SPRU have focused on developing more effective 'open' innovation systems; intellectual property rules; uses for expertise in governance and links between research, higher education and industry.

We also tackle the challenges raised by risks, impacts and contending interests around science and technology. Here, we examine 'market failures', uncertainties, social inequalities and the exercise of political or economic power to shape change. We address the challenges of risk regulation, technology appraisal and foresight, 'resilience' and 'precaution', 'evidence-based policy' and contested expertise. We have created and continue to develop tools for public participation and stakeholder deliberation. SPRU gives special attention to the roles of knowledge and innovation in global poverty alleviation, the building of secure low-carbon energy systems and other transitions to sustainability.
