SPRU - Science and Technology Policy Research

Information, Networks and Knowledge (INK)

INK: The Information and Communications Technology (ICT) research group

INK is SPRU's ICT research group dedicated to enhancing the understanding of the interactions between innovation in ICT and social, political, economic and market dynamics.

Members of INK make use of multiple methods and approaches, and a rich variety of disciplinary backgrounds including economics, sociology and management science, to study the ways in which knowledge, information and data are produced, distributed, deployed and transformed by individuals, communities, firms and regions, with the aim of informing policy-making, and uncovering the (often hidden) assumptions and values that underlie decision-making activities often presented in purely technological terms.

Current research areas include industrial dynamics of Open Source and other software and hardware industries, developing countries, civil society, national and international ICT policy, and the balance between individual rights (including freedom to innovate and privacy), intellectual property rights and security issues.
