We offer an exciting and stimulating academic environment, with very highly rated teaching and an interdisciplinary ethos:
Sociology at Sussex was ranked in the top 10 in the UK in The Times Good University Guide 2013 and The Complete University Guide 2013-14, and 10th in The Guardian University Guide 2014. We also rank among the top 100 universities in the world for sociology in the QS World University Rankings 2012.
Our single and joint honours degrees combine a strong grounding in the basics of sociology with the opportunity to specialise in a range of options. Our degrees are broad, providing practical and theoretical skills, research-methods training, analytical and presentational skills and experience in working independently and in groups - all of which are attractive to employers. You learn how to seek out sources of information, how to sort out a mass of conflicting evidence, how to present a coherent summary, and a convincing conclusion, how to present your ideas clearly, how to make sense of a table of figures, and how to collect data.
Sociology graduates from Sussex go on to a wide range of careers. Some take higher degrees or vocational training qualifications. Of those entering employment directly, health, social welfare, housing and education have been popular choices.
