Biography

Wesley Goatley is a sound artist and researcher in critical data aesthetics whose practice examines opaque power and hidden processes in data and networked technologies through installations, objects, and talks.

Following his MA in Music and Sonic Media at Sussex, Wesley received a scholarship from the Sussex Humanities Lab to pursue a critical and creative practice PhD in critical data aesthetics.  This research addresses the politics of data and practitioner intervention, towards developing critical practices of data aestheticisation which promote reflexivity and cultural critique.

Wesley's ongoing artistic practice explores and informs his research, such as The Dark Age of Connectionism (2017).  This work explored the hidden capacities of always-listening devices such as the Amazon Echo, and the capacities we have to unravel the massive systems which these devices rely upon.

He is currently an associate lecturer on the London College of Communication's Interaction Design Communcation MA.
