Sussex Plus webfolios were better than ever this year, says the Careers and Employability Centre (CEC).
As part of the Sussex Plus project, students create a personalised ‘webfolio’ - an online CV showcasing their skills with links, photos, film and scanned-in documents.
And now the CEC has decided on the three best webfolios of 2013. They were produced by second-year Law student Gavan Harrison, Rubilee Mabini, who is in the final year of a degree in Law with Spanish; and second-year Politics undergraduate, Bree Allegretti.
To acknowledge the many high-quality webfolios, six students were also highly commended.
Andy Howard, Career Development Advisor in the CEC and one of the selection panel, said: “The quality of webfolios has stepped up this year. Students have put considerable effort into presenting themselves digitally online. We’ve seen a range of really positive and creative webfolios that we think will help students in their job search.”
In addition to receiving £100 in vouchers, each of the three winners will also be featured in University of Sussex promotional materials.
Winner Gavan Harrison encourages students to get involved: “Sussex Plus bridges the gap between you and the people/recruiters you choose to showcase your work with. The platform allows you to showcase your practical skills and experiences at an early stage in your career. Sussex Plus reflects the 21st-century shift towards sharing information on a professional level.”
Employers also consider the webfolio a great tool for students. Matt Fox, the founder-director of Kineo, says: “When we look for new staff, we’re particularly interested in their practical skills, and how they can apply these to our work.
“The online portfolio is tangible evidence of their interest and ability for working in digital media. It’s an innovative way for prospective new team members to show their mettle and it shows us they already probably talk the same language as us.”
Any students who would like to produce a webfolio just need to register with Sussex Plus.
For those who need a helping hand, the CEC offer individual tutorials to become familiar with the software and create the webfolio.
