Biography

MusB (Manchester) MFA (Princeton) GRNCM PPRNCM FRNCM. Professor of Music. Composer and pianist. Martin has taught at Sussex since 1988. During 1998/9 he was the first ever composer-in-residence at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, New Jersey. Research

A composer and pianist, published by Oxford University Press. His music is widely performed, broadcast and recorded and he has completed commissions from the BBC (O Rio), Orkest de Volharding (Hootenanny), and the London Sinfonietta (Jazz Machines) amongst others. His opera, A Better Place, was commissioned and premiered by English National Opera at the Coliseum in July 2001 and recieved a second production in Manchester in December 2003. Recent works include a string quintet for the Brighton Festival, a substantial piece for solo piano, a major work for the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra, with whom he was Composer-in-Focus for 2006/8, and a saxophone concerto. Martin is pianist with the new music/ improvisatory group Notes Inegales.
