Biography

Dr Sam Hayden  BA; DPhil (Sussex), PGCert (Royal Conservatory, The Hague) completed his DPhil in Composition in 1998, and completed an AHRC Fellowship in the Creative and Performing Arts in 2005.  Recent commissions include works for the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Ictus, Mieko Kanno, London Sinfonietta, Ensemble Mosaik, Oslo Sinfonietta and RepertorioZero.  He has been the recipient of numerous prizes and awards, including the 1995 Benjamin Britten International Competition for Composers, with mv (1992, rev. 2002) for orchestra, and the 2002 Christoph Delz Foundation Competition, with Sunk Losses (2003) for orchestra.  He was commissioned to compose Collateral Damage (1999) for the Faber Music Millennium Series, premiered by Kokoro in 2000, and subsequently performed by Ensemble Intercontemporain and the London Sinfonietta.  His BBC Radio 3 commission Substratum (2006) was premiered by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, during the 2007 BBC Proms season, conducted by David Robertson.  His works have been widely performed in the UK and on the European continent at contemporary music festivals including Huddersfield, MaerzMusik (Berlin), Tage für Neue Musik (Zürich) and Ultima (Oslo). His works have been broadcast on radio stations including NRK Radio, Saarland Radio and BBC Radio 3’s 'Hear and Now' programme, and have been recorded on the Divine Art, GROB, NMC, Oboe Classics and UTS labels.  He is co-director of ensemble [rout] and a member of the laptop improvisation duo butterflyCut.
