Teaching Excellence Awards 2012

Two Mathematics lecturers have been presented with a School Teaching Award, to commend them on the quality of their teaching. They were nominated by Sussex Mathematics students. Summaries of the nominations can be found below. Both lecturers were presented with a gift, and attended a small celebration with colleagues and students.

Dr Istvan Kiss

Istvan has a style that truly inspires students and shows his passion and dedication for the taught material. He delivers material in an informative and professional way that combines connecting with the students and creating a relaxed, yet challenging, learning environment. He responds well to, and acts on, student feedback, his own observations and suggestions from his peers. He invests time in designing interesting and interactive lectures – he strongly believes in using a mixture of different teaching methods to make module material more interesting and engaging for students. His feedback is guided by solid principles – timeliness, being positive, stating what is good and what is not, providing formative feedback and being constructive by suggesting ways in which students can improve the quality of their work and maximise their opportunities to increase their learning from taking a specific module. Istvan has also been awarded the University of Sussex Teaching Excellence Award.

Dr Vanessa Styles

Vanessa StylesEvery student's favourite lecturer is Vanessa; she is a fantastic lecturer as well as being one of the most friendly people you can meet. She has a lot of patience with students and will help in whichever way she can. Her courses are taught with such passion and are explained thoroughly. Vanessa is a stimulating, challenging and inspiring teacher. Her lectures are the most exciting lectures as everyone seems to keep focused on what she is teaching as well as what she is saying. Her lectures are very innovative; the material is very different from material we have learnt before as well as building on knowledge of Mathematics we already know. This I believe is why students are able to stay focused in her lectures and always enjoy coming to them. The way Vanessa teaches really makes a difference to how much students learn as we seem to be able to retain the information very accurately.
