Jennifer Platt, Emeritus Professor of Sociology, has scored a hat-trick of awards in less than a month.
Professor Platt has just been notified that the American Sociological Association's section on the History of Sociology will present its 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award to her at the ASA’s annual conference in Denver, Colorado in August.
In April Professor Platt found out that the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences at the University of Gent in Belgium has awarded her the Sarton medal for 2012-13. (Dr George Sarton (1884-1956), who is considered the founding father of the history of sciences, was a Gent alumnus.) As Sarton medal holder, in March 2013 Professor Platt will give a lecture at Gent about the history and philosophy of sociology.
And also in April, Professor Platt became the first recipient of the British Sociological Association’s award for Distinguished Service to British Sociology. This award marks “an extraordinary life lived as a sociologist who has served the discipline in the UK”. Professor Platt received the award during the BSA’s annual conference, held at the University of Leeds from 11-13 April. As award holder, she will deliver a public lecture at the BSA’s next presidential event in October.
