Teaching support

We are always keen to provide support with using the Library for your students in whatever way works best for you. Learning and Teaching Support are responsible for undergraduates and taught postgraduates.

Bespoke sessions can be arranged with prior consultation. We can accommodate groups of up to 40 students at one time and build the session to suit your students' needs.

Content can vary around the following:

  • finding quality information using the Electronic Library
  • searching for journal articles
  • building effective searching strategies
  • using online tutorials to improve information skills
  • referencing and avoiding plagiarism
  • effective internet searching, including evaluation of web resources
  • using other libraries and archives

We use interactivity in our sessions such as setting practical exercises, using the PRS voting “clickers” and other appropriate methods. Sessions can be based in larger ITS PC clusters or in our new Library teaching area, the Open Learning Space.

As well as the bespoke sessions, we offer a full teaching programme. You can either implement this as a whole or you can pick and choose the parts that best suit your needs.

Who?When?What?Objectives?
First years (level one) Spring term

15 minute informal talk at the start of a lecture or seminar

We would aim to see all first years in your department. This would be a mini talk about InfoSuss, Library web pages and online journals to raise their awareness of these resources.
Second years (level two) Autumn term 1-1.5 hour session This would be a follow-up interactive session on PCs. We would cover online journals in more detail as well as using subject resources to find articles and other materials online.
Third years (level three) Autumn term 1-1.5 hour session An advanced session aimed at improving dissertation research skills. We would encourage students to come with their own keywords to prepare search strategies and use online resources.
Masters Autumn term 1-1.5 hour session We would run an interactive session to cover online resources at Sussex and advanced subject searching.

We are happy to run joint sessions with a member of academic staff. Such sessions can be very effective in cementing the relevance of what is being taught. We can also combine sessions with other sections of the Library such as Special Collections. This enables students to look at valuable primary and secondary resources side by side.

Please contact the Learning and Teaching Support team to arrange a session.
