Professor Stephen Shute, Head of the School of Law, Politics and Sociology, invites you to the 'Issues in Criminal Justice' lectures:
Stephen Shute
"The aim of this major new series of lectures, which will be delivered on the University campus and are open to persons from outside the university as well as inside, is to attract very distinguished speakers to the School of Law, Politics and Sociology to deliver lectures on an issue of current interest concerning the UK's criminal justice system. I am hoping that this series will deliver thought provoking sessions exploring criminal justice issues." (Professor Stephen Shute)
The 2011/12 Issues in Criminal Justice Lectures
Women in prison: Corston five years on
Nick Hardwick CBE is currently Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons.
He is also Chair of the Housing Ombudsman Service and a trustee of New Horizon Youth Centre. From 2003 to 2010, he was the first Chair of the Independent Police Complaints Commission and has previously held posts at The National Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders (NARCRO), the Department of Environment, the Refugee Council and Centrepoint - a charity and housing association for young homeless people.
The lecture reflected on developments in the UK since the 2007 Corston Report, a review of women with particular vulnerabilities in the criminal justice system, which outlined "the need for a distinct radically different,
visibly-led, strategic, proportionate, holistic, woman-centred, integrated approach".
