Sussex Centre for Language Studies

Sussex Syrian Refugee Scholarship

To date the University of Sussex has successfully supported 46 Syrian refugees, some of whom have gone on to study at undergraduate or postgraduate level. The aim of the scheme is to grant English language Scholarships to a total of 50 Syrian refugees to prepare them for life and work or further study in the UK.

The University of Sussex English Language scholarship for Syrian refugees ('the Scholarship') is available to applicants already in the UK on the UK Government's Syrian Vulnerable Persons Relocation Scheme for Syrian nationals ('SVPRS') or those who have been granted Refugee or Humanitarian Protection status. Potential students must apply via the application process for the Scholarship, which is on a competitive basis. The successful applicants will study English for General and Academic Purposes at the University of Sussex Centre for Language Studies (SCLS).

The Scholarship will cover all English Language course tuition fees (subject to satisfactory attendance). Please note that the University will not be able to provide accommodation. Eligible Scholarship applicants are expected to already be living in the county of East or West Sussex, or in Brighton & Hove.

The total amount of each Scholarship will be determined based on the duration of study, which depends on the English language level on entry.

The Scholarship Entry Criteria

To be eligible for the Sussex Syrian Refugee Scholarship applicants must:

  • Provide satisfactory evidence that they are in the UK as part of the UK Government's Syrian Vulnerable Persons Relocation Scheme or have been granted Refugee or Humanitarian Protection status
  • Meet the Scholarship's English Language and other entry requirements
  • Already reside in the county of East or West Sussex, or in Brighton & Hove

Scholarship Application Process

  • Applications can only be accepted from Syrian nationals already on the SVPRS scheme or who have been granted Refugee or Humanitarian Protection status
  • Eligible applicants must apply online directly to the Sussex Centre for Language Studies

Enquiries about eligibility can be addressed to: svprs@sussex.ac.uk

The University has only four Scholarships remaining. Applications will be reviewed by a selection panel against the entry criteria and shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend the University to undertake an English language assessment. Successful candidates will be notified, with details of the start date and length of their course.

The amount of the Scholarship awarded will be dependent on the length of course and the applicant's English Language ability, as assessed by the University. Please see further information on the course structure. This course will run for 12 weeks, with the possibility of extension, based on attendance and commitment.
