English language and study skills support
- Are you a full-time international/overseas student?
- Is English a second or additional language?
If the answer is YES to any of the above questions you may be interested in registering for academic development support.
This support is available free of charge to all full-time international/overseas students completing a full degree at the University of Sussex. In these sessions, we cover academic cultural differences; learning styles; what is meant by plagiarism, argument and critical analysis, as well as looking at English for academic purposes.
You can register for all these services by filling in the online registration form.
Academic development workshops
The workshops will focus on academic and English language skills and include subjects such as note-taking, summarising and paraphrasing, structuring an essay, understanding and writing essay titles, paragraphing, referencing and writing a bibliography, introductions and conclusions and advanced language skills.
After you have registered, you may book these workshops through Sussex Direct.
Please note: This is not the Academic Practice Workshop (for referred students).
Writing workshops
Students will submit examples of their writing in advance, and as a group we will discuss, analyse and improve.
Tutorials
Registered students are entitled to 30-minute tutorials. These are to help you with any aspect of your studies, but most students use them to ask for advice on their written work.
What are the tutorials for?
- The tutors can give help and advice with any language or study skills issues related to your studies at Sussex: essays, term papers, dissertations, academic conventions, oral presentations, participating in seminars etc.
- Tutorial help is available for registered students for whom English is an additional language.
- The tutorials are not a proof-reading service.
After you have registered, you may book through the Academic Development Study Direct site.
Drop-in sessions
There are also weekly drop-in sessions for which no appointment is needed. Email support is available for students who are unable to attend the tutorials.
You can register for all these services by filling in the online registration form.
