Department of History

Postgraduate study

In the past three decades, the University of Sussex has established itself as one of the leading research universities in the humanities. From its origins in the early 1960s, Sussex was the pioneer of interdisciplinary studies in Britain. It has subsequently been the most resolutely interdisciplinary of our universities. Taking full advantage of constantly developing faculty strengths and interests, the Department of History seeks to promote innovative topics in research and teaching across disciplines. We offer a stimulating social and physical environment for students and faculty:

  • History at Sussex is ranked 11th in the UK in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2012 and in the top 20 in the UK in The Times Good University Guide 2013 and The Complete University Guide 2012-13.
  • Rated 15th in the UK for research in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). 90 per cent of our research was rated as internationally recognised or higher, with 65 per cent rated as internationally excellent or higher, and a quarter rated as world leading.

The Department of History runs a weekly work-in-progress seminar throughout the academic year, to which visiting speakers, research students and faculty contribute. It has become nationally known for promoting historical innovation and conceptual discussion, and all history research and MA students are expected to attend. In addition, History postgraduate students organise and participate in a biannual day conference of their own, and have the opportunity to participate in other workshops on specific academic issues and skills relevant to both MA and doctoral work.
