Biography
John Barlow completed his BSc (hons) and MES at Wilfrid Laurier University. His honours and masters theses focused on mass movements along the Niagara Escarpment in Ontario. John received his PhD from the University of Calgary for research into the automated detection of rapid mass movements using digital data. Upon completion of his doctoral research, John did post doctoral work at both the University of Saskatchewan and Durham University. He joined the University of Sussex as Lecturer in Applied Geomorphology in 2011.
John’s research focus is the quantification of erosional mass flux associated with slope failures under differing environmental and geomorphic boundary conditions. Major research themes include:
(1) Development of automated landslide detection techniques using high-resolution satellite sensor data as well as the use of high resolution topographical datasets derived from LiDAR and TLS.
(2) Numerical estimates of erosion using negative power law scaling of landslide magnitude-frequency distributions.
(3) Use of cosmogenic isotopes to quantify sea cliff recession during the Holocene.
John will be primarily involved in the teaching of the MSc course in applied geomorphology
