Recruitment & Teaching taster courses

Teaching taster courses

For school experience placements in the shortage subjects (Science, Maths and Languages), see details of the TDA's School Experience Programme (SEP).

Week long Teaching Taster Courses are run by the Department of Education at the University of Sussex in partnership with The Sussex Consortium and a local school.  Our last course took place in June 2012 at the Priory School. Details of the next course will be promoted here as soon as they are available

On a Teaching Taster Course you will:

  • spend a week observing teaching in an Ofsted rated 'outstanding' school
  • hear from experienced and recently qualified teachers
  • find out about developments in education policy and practice

Course structure

The week comprises two taught days and two observation days. Places are limited and given to those who are most 'training ready', ie. who have the qualifications necessary to apply for a secondary teacher training course.
Priority is also given to those studying 'shortage' subjects: mathematics, science and modern foreign languages.

Progression

Those who successfully complete a Teaching Taster Course are offered guidance on how to secure an interview for a place on a Primary, Secondary or KS2/3 PGCE programme here at the University of Sussex, or for a place on our Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP).
