SSKE Physics, Chemistry and Maths

Short Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SSKE) courses - otherwise known as 'booster' courses - boost your chosen subject knowledge up to GCSE standard. Taken over a four week period, these courses are designed for science specialists who need to update an area of their non-specialist science subject in order to feel confident teaching it.

SSKE Physics and Chemistry

Course Leader: Andy Chandler-Grevatt

Boost your subject knowledge to GCSE level in Physics or Chemistry with a Short Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SSKE) course. Courses are designed for science specialists who need to update their science knowledge in one of these subject areas for the confidence to teach it at GCSE level. Participants will major in their specialist science area, but will also have the opportunity to take modules in other science area, ie. Physics, Chemistry or Biology.

SSKE Physics and Chemistry courses are funded by the Teaching Agency and are free to participants who are also entitled to a tax-free bursary of £200 per week. Participants study full-time over a four week period. The courses comprise two weeks of distance-learning and two weeks of instruction at the University of Sussex.

Entry requirements

  • Specialist knowledge in Chemistry or Physics to degree level
  • A desire to improve your subject knowledge in your specialist science subject

SSKE Biology

Course Leader: Andy Chandler-Grevatt

This full-time course studied over a four week period provides a subject knowledge boost for those about to train to become science teachers. Biology specialists often need extra help with their Physics and Cemistry subject knowledge and this course is designed to update science subject knowledge to GCSE level.

Sessions focus on theory and practical work associated with teaching Physics and Chemistry at KS3 and GCSE. The firts two weeks of teaching is conducted utilising our bespoke VIDLearnTM distance learning platform. This is followed by two weeks of practical work for which you will be based at the University. Students are given a Subject Knowledge Audit which addresses their individual needs throughout the course.

SSKE Biology is NOT funded and is subject to a fee of £200. The course requires at least 15 participants to run.

Entry requirements

  • Your ITE (Initial Teacher Education) provider may have recommended this course for you
  • You must have a confirmed place on an ITE programme starting September 2012
  • You can do this course if you wish to and can self fund

SSKE Mathematics

 

Course leader: Irene Dallaway Gonzalez

As with the science SSKE courses, SSKE Mathematics is studied full-time at the University of Sussex: Monday-Friday, 9.30-3.30pm. 
It is funded by the Teaching Agency and free to participants who are also entitled to a tax-free bursary.
The course for the academic year 2012/13 runs from 1st - 26th July 2013.
