Overseas Trained Teacher Programme (OTTP)

Course Leader: Janet Steadman

The University of Sussex - on behalf of the Teaching Agency - runs a programme for overseas-trained teachers wishing to obtain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) to teach here in the UK. Teachers who trained in Australia, New Zealand, Canada or the USA are no longer required to undertake further training or assessment in order to practice in the UK.
See www.education.gov.uk/schools/careers/careeropportunities/overseas-trainedteachers/a00205926/australia-canada-nz-usa
Teachers who trained in other non-EU countries have two ways of gaining QTS: either via the Assessment Only route which is designed for experienced and currently practising teachers, or the OTTP.

Overview

The aim of the OTTP programme is to create an Individual Training Plan (ITP) with the school in which the overseas trained teacher is teaching. The ITP forms the basis of the programme and sets out the activities needed to engage in and demonstrate evidence of in order to meet the standards required for QTS. The University provides seminars, visits teachers in-school, provides support and guidance and arranges assessment for QTS.
