Job Opportunity: EDOREN Research Officer, Abuja
Oxford Policy Management (OPM) is seeking a dynamic, motivated research officer to be part of a new team implementing a four year international project funded by the UK government’s Department for International Development (DFID) in Nigeria: Education Data, Research and Evaluation in Nigeria (EDOREN). EDOREN will generate new evidence and understanding of how best to support equitable access and improved learning outcomes for all Nigerian children through innovation and sustainable education systems development
The Research Officer should have professional experience in research on education in Nigeria, including on northern Nigeria, an outstanding academic record including at least a master’s degree in economics, education or development studies, and a demonstrated record of high achievement in research and education issues. Knowledge of northern Nigerian languages is highly desirable.
The Research Officer will undertake a wide range of tasks including primary and secondary research on education issues in Nigeria, writing for publication, coordinating with a wide range of stakeholders working on education in Nigeria (including Government and development partners) and contributing to managing the dissemination of education research to maximise positive impact on education outcomes in Nigeria.
The position is full-time, based in Abuja but with particular focus on and extensive travel to Lagos, Bauchi, Katsina, Niger, Sokoto and Zamfara (subject to security protocols). The initial term is one year, extended across 43 months subject to good performance. Benefits include 25 days holiday, statutory insurance and contributions to a contributory pension scheme. The salary is expected to be in the region of N 5,500,000 per annum, depending on experience.

Main accountabilities:
As a core member of the EDOREN team based in Abuja, to:
- Support the development and implementation of EDOREN’s activities across all workstreams (though primarily workstreams 1, 2, 4 and 5) through technical work, liaising with workstream leaders as required
- Contribute to EDOREN’s management and reporting in Abuja under the direction of the EDOREN Nigeria Director, including support to the Abuja office and consultancy staff working in Nigeria.

To carry out other EDOREN tasks under the direction of the EDOREN Country Director within an agreed annual performance agreement.
Specific responsibilities
- Work flexibly and liaise with the leaders of workstreams to establish a clear and manageable set of priority activities
- Develop strong and effective working relationships with other members of the EDOREN team
- Undertake primary fieldwork required for research and evaluation on education issues (including political economy) and projects, particularly involving operational research
- Undertake secondary data collection and analysis Support the development and implementation of EDOREN’s knowledge management strategy
- Support the development and implementation of EDOREN’s capacity development strategies

Supporting the management and reporting of EDOREN activities as required
Qualifications & experience
- Degree and post-graduate qualification (at least masters) in relevant discipline (for example, economics, education, development studies), with very good grades.
- A solid knowledge and understanding of education issues in Nigeria, including girls’ education and private education.
- At least five years of relevant professional work experience of both primary and secondary education research in Nigeria.
- Experience in northern Nigeria, preferably working on education issues.
- Excellent analytical skills.
- Commitment to achieving improved education outcomes in Nigeria.
- Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and clients, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders in complex settings.
- Fluency in English and the ability to work in at least one other Nigerian language, preferably Hausa.
