Centre for the Study of Sexual Dissidence

MPhil and PhD in Sexual Dissidence

In these research degrees you develop a large research project and submit a thesis of 40,000 words for the MPhil and 80,000 words for the PhD. You work closely with one or more members of the faculty at the University of Sussex. You can visit our people page to explore the faculty that you might work with at Sussex. For students interested in literature and sexual dissidence, we offer supervision in all periods of literary study from the medieval period to the present. We also offer supervision in the interdisciplinary areas of queer theory, postcolonial studies, social/cultural history, popular culture, psychoanalysis, film and media, digital culture, and visual culture. Full-time students usually complete their thesis within three years; part-time study is also available. Before applying formally, interested students should write first to the Director of the Centre, Dr Rachel O’Connell, with a brief proposal.
